[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Rocket+2 video cards = problem

brod@jessica.Stanford.EDU (Brodie Lockard) (05/29/91)

Here's one for you hardware wizards out there.

I have a Mac II with a Rev B motherboard (the kind with a NuChip), and three
cards:
-Radius Rocket 68040 accelerator
-SuperMac Spectrum/8 video card running a 19" Trinitron monitor
-Original Apple Mac II video card running an original 12" monochrome monitor

Any two of these cards work fine together. All three work together if the
Rocket is off. But with all three cards and the Rocket on, the big monitor
displays a plaid pattern of 25 miniature images. Sounds like maybe power
overload? My manuals say the following about power requirements.

Apple Mac II video card: 50 watts maximum, all line conditions
Rocket: 4.5 amps @ 5V (with 8 MB RAM)
SuperMac Spectrum/8 card
 w/19" Trinitron Monitor
 running on 100-120V: 2.6 A

The Mac II is supposed to be able to supply the following:
+5V bus: 12.8 amps
+12V bus: 1.3 amps
-12V bus: 1.0 amps

The other things drawing power from the Mac are a 40 MB Quantum internal hard
disk, and the Apple 12" monochrome monitor. Other details:

System 6.0.7, 32-bit QD installed, no INITs, MF on
4 80ns 1MB SIMMs on motherboard
4 120ns 1MB SIMMs on Rocket (jumper removed)
External hard disk, printer & modem connected

I tried these three cards in a IIci--it wouldn't turn on. With just the Rocket
and Spectrum/8 installed, a 13" Apple color monitor connected to the IIci's
on-board video, and the Rocket on, everything worked fine.

Why won't all three cards work together with the Rocket on?
