[comp.sys.mac.hardware] HP Deskwriter & fonts

timr@hpwarcz.wal.hp.com (Tim Rice) (05/22/91)

I have the chance to buy a new DESKwriter for a good price. The font set
is seperate. Since I haven't seen/used one of these on a Mac, have a Mac Plus,
I was wondering if anyone knew what I needed.

My basic question is: Do I need these fonts?
Are they software or some hardware cartridges?
If I need them, should I get the whole set or what?
Anything else I should know?

P.S. I can get a DESKwriter for the LASERwriter price. I'm assuming the
      DESKwriter is the better choice???

Until you get ATM, I would say yes, if you want good quality type. However,
since there is so little in the way of fonts just for the Deskwriter, I would
suggest you get ATM as soon as you can. That way, your screen will look better,
your type will be great, and you'll be able to use gobs of different fonts.

Software.

I wouldn't pay extra for anymore. See above.

Eh? That doesn't sound like much of a deal. Laswerwriters are generally at least
$1k; deskwriters are under $500. But if you mean you can get a
laserwriter for the Deskwriter price, in general I'd say go for the laserwriter.
But of course, that depends on if it's used, etc.

This is not unlike buying a VW Rabbit for the price of a Porsche.
Of course, the Porsche doesn't come with Fahrvergnuegen... :)

I would say not. I suffered along with the four fonts that come with
the printed (Symbol, Courier, Times, and Helvetica) and did alright.
However, with the advent of TrueType and the help of a Mr. Dave Platt,
there are now at least 25 free TrueType fonts out there that look
amazing at any size, and all you need to use them is System 7 (or the
TrueType INIT and 6.0.7...)

I assume you mean you can get a DeskWriter for the StyleWriter price.
As the previous minor flames have pointed out, you question as posed is
a bit ludicrous...:) but if you really meant StyleWriter, you should
definately buy the DW. The DW is about twice as fast and output is
comparable. For $300 (approx. StyleWriter price, no?) the DW is a damn
fine printer, IMHO.

P.S. I have no connection to Hewlett-Packard other than as a VERY
satisfied consumer...

I could not use any of the HP fonts under system 7, the driver would complain
that they can't be found. I have try putting the fonts into the system folder,
and also the extensions folder. In any case, this is a minor problem,
because Truetype works perfectly. My only grip is that I have set page setup,
on each document to avoid getting the "HP font not found" message.

The HP fonts are working for me. I put the driver and DeskWriter Fonts
folder in the System Folder and aliased them to the Extensions folder.
The "not found ... sending a bit map" is annoying, but the output is 300 dpi.

I don't have this problem either. The fonts folder is in the system folder
and the driver is in the extensions folder. The only time I get a
message indicating "using bitmapped fonts" is in the cases where I have
tossed the HP outline fonts and am just using the True Type fonts for
display and printout. I only kept the HP fonts where there is no True Type
equivalent -- anyway, I get the HP fonts for "free", and I agree that if
I had to pay real money for them I would just go with True Type :-).
