[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Installer killing a Hard Drive?

rbrink@hubcap.clemson.edu (Rick Brink) (06/06/91)

I sent a copy of 6.05 home with consultee last week. When he tried to install
it, all Hello broke loose. At first, the install went fine, then he decided
to cancel while the printer drivers were installing (I had told him to do a
custom install since he uses a Personal LWnt.) When he tried to boot, the
drive couldn't be found [?] on screen (a Mac+). I told him to do install again.
Well, to shorten it up, after 5 tries the drive will not boot. You can
sometimes get it to mount as a second drive, but usually not when booting from
a floppy. Short of a concidental failure of the SCSI on the disk, how could the
installing system kill a drive? (I have reinitialized the drive with the
manufacturers installer.) It's a 40 mb Everex (Connors 40 meg. inside.) He
claims to have had no problem before the install.

I've recommended he replace the drive, but I'm still curious about the causes...
