[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mode32=serial DeskWriter+VM

jackh@rice.edu (Jack W. Howarth) (06/14/91)

I just installed my copy of Mode32 on my SE/30 (8meg/105meg HD) and found that
as rumored the 32 bit mode allows the Deskwriter driver to print under Apple's
virtual memory when using the serial connect mode of the Deskwriter. I printed
an 8 page Word document and a 12 page MacDraw II doc with 32 bit mode on and 16
meg of VM and had no problems. The tech support at Connectix was unreal. I had
crashed at first installing Mode32 and called them. Turned out that the IDS disk
driver is almost completely compatible but requires listing in a table of drivers that Mode32 uses to avoid certain problems in closing drivers. The tech walkedme through using MacsBug to jump to the disk driver name ".IDSSDriver0" and helped me patch that into a STR# in Mode32. Presto. No problems on booting. This is
fixed in a newer version now shipping. Amazing tech support. Bravo.
Now we need to get HP to realize that if the serial problem under 24 bit VM is trully Apples fault then they should release a version of the DW drivers that
fixes the PageSetup bug and any other non-serial bugs. Its odd that Apple's own
bugs in System 7.0 forced my to the bleeding edge of technology (32-bit clean)
just so I could keep VM turned on.
I have found out that the following software is 32-bit clean and VM ready
AfterDark 2.0u
DosMounter 2.04 (not released yet)
DiskExpress II 2.07
Microphone II 3.0
MacDraw II 1.1v2
MacWrite II 1.1v2 (released this week)
Expressionist 2.07
Word 4.0D
Suitcase 1.2.10
FullWrite Professional except for a minor bug
Fastback II 2.5 - 32 bit ready but some VM crashes
Igor 1.24
                                                Cheers
                                                                     Jack
