Got a somewhat weird question regarding the ways in which a LaserWriter II can be set up: My brother is halfway across the country, working a summer job to help pay for grad school. As part of his job, he prints out a small newsletter once a week (about five pages). He's on a 4 Meg SE, using Publish-It Easy to print the newsletter on a LaserWriter II. It takes an hour to print 5 pages with this set up, using common fonts (Helvetica, Courier, Times, Geneva). The printer is hooked up to the Mac in a rather peculiar fashion: by the SCSI ports on both machines. Yes, I had him double check; this is *not* a LaserWriter SC, as far as he can tell. However, they have to use the SC print driver to access the printer. Oh, and they have ATM on the machine as well. My assumption is that the Laserwriter IISC print driver is taking those nice standard fonts and using ATM to convert them to appropriate bitmaps. Then, the printer has to take those bitmaps and convert them back into PostScript. This could readily account for the problems they're experiencing, *if I'm right*. So, my questions are: 1) Is this a "legitimate" way to hook up a LaserWriter II? 2) Is my assumption that the hook-up is the source of the problem likely to be correct? -- R David Francis francis@cis.ohio-state.edu
