[Sorry about the extra post in comp.sys.mac.system, I coulda sworn I posted it here before!!] I'm finally going to get around to buying a hard drive for my Mac Plus and since my cash is limited right now, I was figuring on going with the best "bang for the buck" alternative, which seems to be the Wholesale 54 Quantum Pro 105s, which can be had for $389 in external configuration. My question to the net is what experience others have had with this company in terms of service, friendliness, quality, etc. I know this firm was discussed a few months ago but not many people had too much experience with them then. I'm hoping that because of their low prices a few people have taken the plunge and bought from them and I can benefit from their experience. Specifically I'd like to know what purchasers thought of the quality of the external case/power supply/SCSI connection supplied by WH 54, and the quality of the formatting software included (as far as ease of use, does it do hard partitioning, etc.) And finally how people would rate their overall satisfaction with the company. Would they buy again from them or spend the extra dollars to go to a firm like Allied Peripheral Systems, which seems to be one of the net's favorites for cheap Mac hard drives. Oh, and if anyone was dissatisfied and tried to return their product, was WH 54 nice about it or did they make returning merchandise a pain? Thanks for any and all help I can get! I'll summarize for the net when the responses start to dwindle... -- |-----------------------------|-----------------------------------------------| | Doug Siebert | "All opinions expressed herein are obviously | | | superior to yours, otherwise you wouldn't | | dsiebert@icaen.uiowa.edu | need to be reading this, now would you?" :-) | |-----------------------------|-----------------------------------------------|

Avoid them like the plague. I've excahnged e-mail with a dozen
others who've had my same experience:
--------------------------------------------------
May 20th ordered drive
May 26th recieved drive without mounting bracket
May 30th requested they ship bracket and hardware
(promised to ship immediately)
June 13th called company again.
(Was put on hold 30 minutes and was disconnected)
called back again.
(was instructed to ship entire drive back at my expense
before they would ship bracket and cable.)
June 14th shipped drive.
June 21st called company. had no record of drive shipment.
(sent UPS Next Day service on the 14th)
June 25th I cancelled the order and had my credit card company refuse to pay.
-----------------------------------------------
The Net Administrator from our department has purchased 6 Mac Drives from
APS and is very happy with all of them.

I haven't done business with them, but I've heard the screams.... Seriously, when their ads first appeared about six months ago, I checked around and was given to understand that they're a dba for Hard Drives International, a company which has developed an odious reputation in the Mac market. Now this company that appeared out of the blue six months ago--and initially couldn't decide whether it's name was "Wholesale 54" or "Warehouse 54"--is advertising itself as "One of the oldest names in the storage business!" APS charges more because they're conservative--they aren't courting bankruptcy by engaging in cutthroat pricing--and because they use some of that money to hire competent staff, and enough of them. That's how they developed their reputation for consistently coming through for their customers. Disclaimer: My only relationship with APS is that I'm a *very* satisfied customer. --Carl Alexander | BCS*Mac News Editor, The Active Window | The Boston Computer Society cjeff@silver.lcs.mit.edu | Macintosh Users Group
