From GEOFF5@SRI-CSL Sat Oct 8 01:56:21 1983 The three that I have used are CCA (Zimmerman's) EMACS, CMU (Gosling's) EMACS, and STEVE (NIL/EMACS). CCA's costs in the neighborhood of $850, Gosling's $1000, NIL/EMACS $100. Gosling's stuck me as the most divergent from the original Stallman EMACS (to the point where I gave up in frustration). CCA's wasn't quite as clever about display optimization, but was far more usable. STEVE is the only "true" EMACS; unfortunately it's missing some useful functionality. I suspect I'll like it more once it's finished. Of the three, it is the only one that is public domain (the $100 is a copying charge, not a license fee) and I consider this a major plus. Given that Gosling's ersatz EMACS has a small but loyal following it would probably be worthwhile to create a mailing list separate from Info-VAX for people who want to brag about their latest hacks. -=EPS=- ------
