FRESNO (UPI) -- Memorial services will be held Wednesday at Fort
Washington Country Club for Harold ``Hal'' Beatty, former Fresno State
University athletic director, coach and administrator who died last
weekend at the age of 80.
Beatty, a native of Los Angeles who had lived in Frenso for more
than 60 years, died Saturday at his home.
His involvement with FSU began when he attended the school while
earning his bachelor's degree in physical education. He graduated in
1932.
Five years later, Beatty joined the Fresno State physical education
department as a football, basketball and track coach.
During his first three years on the faculty, Beatty served as
varsity basketball coach, freshman football coach, assistant track coach
and coached the wrestling, swimming, tennis and boxing teams in addition
to teaching several classes.
In 1947, Beatty was appointed dean of men, a post he held for nine
eyars before being named athletic director.
He was credited with elevating the caliber of sports programs at
the school during his tenure as athletic director.
Beatty resigned his athletic directorship and as chairman of
physical education department in 1972 to resume fulltime teaching.
In 1979 he retired from the university to concentrate on the
Bulldog Foundation's fund-raising efforts for the school.
Beatty is survived by his wife Marjorie, a daughter and three
grandchildren.
