ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- Frank DiPino allowed one hit over three innings
to collect his eighth straight victory and help the St. Louis Cardinals
move within three games of the Chicago Cubs in the NL East with a 5-3
decision over the New York Mets.
DiPino, 8-0, was the first of four St. Louis relievers to preserve
the Cardinals' fourth straight victory. Ken Dayley pitched out of a
bases-loaded jam and recorded two outs for his 12th save.
Mets starter David Cone, 13-8, lasted two innings in taking the
loss. Cone gave up six hits and five runs and did not record a strike
out. The Mets are third in the NL East, 5 1-2 games behind the Cubs.
Pedro Guerrero knocked in his 111th run of the season -- the most by
a Cardinal since Joe Torre had 137 RBIs in 1971.
The Cardinals jumped to a 3-0 lead off Cone in the first. Willie
McGee led off with an infield single and went to second on Ozzie Smith's
bunt single. Guerrero blooped a double that scored McGee to make it 1-0.
John Morris followed with a double into the left-field corner, scoring
Smith and Guerrero to make it 3-0.
The Cardinals made it 5-0 in the second. Tony Pena singled to left
and pitcher Ken Hill reached when Cone fielded Hill's sacrifice bunt and
threw too late to second to force Pena. Thompson doubled to left to
score Pena and Hill.
New York sent nine batters to the plate and cut the deficit to 5-3
in the third. Juan Samuel led off with a double into the left-field
corner. Tom O'Malley, pinch-hitting for Cone, singled to right, scoring
Samuel and sending Carter to second.
Gregg Jeffries forced O'Malley and Hill loaded the bases by walking
Dave Magadan. Howard Johnson then singled to right to score Carter and
Jefferies to make it 5-3.
DiPino relieved Hill and got Darryl Strawberry to ground out to
first for the second out. Kevin McReynolds was intentionally walked to
load the bases and Keith Hernandez stranded the runners flying out to
right.
