ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- Sid Fernandez tossed a two-hitter and hit a home
run and Darryl Strawberry drove in two runs Thursday night, lifting the
New York Mets to a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The loss ended a four-game St. Louis winning streak and dropped the
Cardinals four games behind first-place Chicago in the NL East. The Mets
are 5 1-2 games back.
Fernandez, 12-5, struck out 13 and didn't walk a batter while
pitching to only 29 batters, two over the minimum. He ran his lifetime
record against the Cardinals to 8-3.
The left-hander, who struck out a club-record 16 earlier this year
in a game against Atlanta, fanned seven of nine batters between the
second and fourth innings.
Fernandez also sparked the New York offense, opening the Mets'
four-run third inning with a single to center. Gregg Jeffries then
walked and after Keith Miller struck out, Howard Johson singled to load
the bases. Kevin McReynolds' infield single scored Fernandez and Darryl
Strawberry drove in two with a single to center. Juan Samuel capped the
four-run inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals put their only runners on base while scoring their
run in the fifth. With one out, McReynolds just missed getting to
Pendleton's drive in left-center that went for a triple, ending a string
of 13 straight batters retired by Fernandez. One out later, Todd Ziele
singled home Pendleton.
The Cardinals may also have lost centerfielder Willie McGee for the
season. The speedster chased down McReynolds' drive to the
left-centerfield wall in the eighth, but re-injured his left hamstring.
He dropped to the ground and while rolling in pain lost his glove.
McReynolds was credited with a triple and he scored on Samuel's two-out
infield single.
Fernandez' first homer in the ninth off Dan Quisenberry capped the
scoring.
