ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals Thursday said pitcher Joe Magrane signed a one-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. In 1989, his third season in the major leagues, Magrane overcame an early season illness to lead the team in victories with 18. Magrane, a southpaw, finished with an 18-9 record and a 2.91 ERA. ``Last season, Joe showed the maturity and command of his pitches necessary to be a dependable winner in the major leagues,'' said Dal Maxvill, the St. Louis general manager. In 34 games last season, Magrane pitched 234 innings and struck out 127. He pitched three shutouts and nine complete games. In his career, Magrane is 32-25 with a 2.89 ERA.
