ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- The California Angels have signed
right-handed relievers Bob McClure and Mark Clear to 1-year contracts,
the team announced Friday.
McClure, 6-1 last season with a 1.55 ERA, reportedly will be paid
$825,000 on a contract that does not include any incentive clauses. He
signed moments before his scheduled 2 p.m. arbitration hearing.
McClure earned $475,000, including bonuses, last season. He was
seeking $880,000 in arbitration, with California offering $650,000.
Clear, 33, did not pitch last season. After leaving spring training
with the Angels, he was placed on the voluntary retirement list after
undergoing surgery in March to repair a ligament in his right elbow.
However, Clear, from nearby Newport Beach, Calif., was offered a
1990 contract after impressing Angels' pitching coach Marcel Lachemann
during recent winter workouts at Anaheim Stadium.
Clear, with a 71-49 career record and 83 saves, began his
major-league career with California in 1979. He has also pitched with
Boston and Milwaukee.
McClure's signing left the Angels with five players still scheduled
for arbitration: first baseman Wally Joyner, whose hearing is set for
Monday; center fielder Devon White, third baseman Jack Howell and
pitchers Kirk McCaskill and Scott Bailes.
The Angels also announced that infielder Gary Disarcina has agreed
to terms. He spent most of 1989 with Double-A Midland of the Texas
League, where he batted .286 with four homers and 54 RBI in 126 games.
