[comp.object] SELF: Language discription wanted...

rogerson@PEDEV.Columbia.NCR.COM (Dale Rogerson) (10/12/89)

After reading about the Self language in this and other newgroups
I would like to learn more about it. Does anyone have a list of
articles or other information on the language?

	Thanks for the information.

The latest is "An Efficient Implementation of SELF, a Dynamically-Typed
Object-Oriented Language Based on Prototypes," by Craig Chambers, David
Ungar, and Elgin Lee. They just presented this at OOPSLA '89, and
the proceedings will be distributed as a special issue of SIGPLAN
Notices soon.

Other things in proceedings that have *already* been issues of
SIGPLAN Notices:

Chambers & Ungar, "Customization: Optimizing Compiler Technology for
SELF, a Dynamically-Typed Object-Oriented Programming Language," from
SIGPLAN '89 (SIGPLAN Notices 24(7), July '89.)

Ungar & Smith, "SELF: the Power of Simplicity," OOPSLA '87. (Sigplan
Notices 22(12), Dec. '87.

there's also Elgin Lee's 1988 Engineer's thesis from Stanford, "Object
Storage and Inheritance for SELF, a Prototype-based Object-Oriented
Programming Language."

Please POST it, folks. I suspect a lot of people are in this boat with
Dale and me (Dale and I? I and Dale? Me and Dale? Hill and Dale? I dunno.)

Is this efficient implementation of SELF available for those of us who
like to play?

Here's a reference to get you started:

Ungar, D and Smith, R.B., 1988: "SELF: The Power of Simplicity",
Proc Spring COMPCON 1988, pp 162-165.

This may also have appeared in OOPSLA '87 (SIGPLAN Notices 22,12,Dec 87).
The title is the same as that above, though it may be different.

Alas, the COMPCON paper gives no other useful references.

I don't have complete references with me, but papers have been
published in:

OOPSLA '87
OOPSLA '89
SIGPLAN '89
