I tried e-mail but it bounced. Someone recently posted about Alpha, an object-oriented (object-based?) OS. I would appreciate it if they (or any other kind soul) would send me some pointers to info about Alpha. Thanks, Brian R. Gilstrap uucibg@swbatl.uucp OR ...!{ texbell, uunet }!swbatl!uucibg By the way: I speak for myself, though even I won't claim it sometimes.

Anyway, here is a very brief answer: Alpha is a distributed, real-time operating system that supports an object/thread programming model. Alpha provides passive objects that may be transparently distributed across multiple processing nodes in a LAN. Alpha threads travel between objects (and possibly between nodes) carrying with them such attributes as their time-constraints or their atomicity requirements. Alpha was developed as the result of 10 years of research done by the Archons project at CMU under the direction of Doug Jensen. Release 1 of Alpha was developed at CMU on a custom testbed constructed from Sun processor boards. Several technical reports describing Release 1 are now available from Concurrent Computer Corp. (where current Alpha Release 2 R&D is based). Carmen Fitzgerald (508-392-2315) is handling the distribution of these reports. Several short articles on Alpha have also appeared recently in magazines such as "EE Times" and "Computer Design" (March 1, 1990 issue). If you have trouble finding the type of information you need, you can contact me and I will try to help. -David Maynard --- David P.
