		 -----------------------------------------------

The "object" based paradigm is increasingly being used as a basis for the
encapsulation and structure of various specification, design and
implementation approaches within computing. Object oriented (O-O)
approaches offer three major benefits for the database field: locality of
information, autonomy of operation and flexibility of structure and
communication within the specification, design and implementation process
itself.

The theme of the conference is firmly the use and benefits of the object
oriented paradigm as applied to the field of databases. For example does
it: enrich the capacity for data semantics, provide a better way of
expressing database updates, aid in enforcing integrity constraints,
provide a mechanism for database views, effect the physical implementation
of databases, help in the communication aspects of federated and
distributed databases etc.

The conference will be a working conference and will therefore be
discussion (as well as object) oriented ! Both the invited keynote
addresses and contributed papers are intended to engender discussion.
Evening sessions may be arranged on an as needed basis for sub group
discussions or impromptu seminars.

			 Industrial Panel
			 ----------------

Chair: Samit Khosla, Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte.

This panel will consist of a number of short presentations based upon the
position statements received on, "the direction of OO technology in the
market place" from the following organisations:
Digital (UK), Ingres (UK), OMG (USA), Oracle (UK), Softlab (UK), Sybase
(UK), Symbolics (UK), Unisys (USA).

The presentations will be followed by a discussion between panel members
and the conference participants. The panel will end by panel member
summaries and the chairman's conclusions.

This panel will be held on the last conference day Friday 6th July, and
will be followed by a panel response to Michael Stonebraker's talk.
Seperate registration of this last day is possible, please see the
registration form.

			 Conference Bursaries
			 --------------------

There will exist funds to "sponsor" a number of student registrations, such
funds will be limited and any one wishing to apply should write with
details of academic affiliation and a letter of recommendation to
