Dear NetLand, I would like to know if anyone has tried or is aware of using the MMS-based object-oriented approach to do software OOD? The MMS (Manufacturing Messaging Specification) is an ISO/OSI standard for the application layer service/protocol. To the best of my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong), the object model is structured around VMDs (Virtual Manufacturing Device). Each VMD is an object (in the physical world controlled electronically) containing subobjects that are instances of the following classes: data, host, events, processes, and semaphores. If the following questions are applicable, I would appreciate greatly if you can share your experiences with me and/or with the net. 1. Has anyone used this MMS paradigm as an object model for object-oriented software design and implementation? In a realtime distributed environment? 2. Has anyone used this approach for database modeling, since it is compatible with dictionary systems such as IRDS or possibly other encyclopedia standards? 3. Has anyone done any comparison of MMS with another ISO (almost) standard like CMIS/CMIP? Joe Chen jchen@usc.edu
