I've been looking for the ECOOP '89 proceedings for a long time. The '87 and '88 proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag, but not the '89 proceedings. For a long time that's all I knew. The Stanford bookstore has finally gotten the book. 1) It took nine months from the conference to availability of the proceedings. 2) The book is hardback, and priced US $69.50. I personally think this is outrageous. I'd like to know why an effective (relatively fast and inexpensive) publisher was abandoned. This does not seem like the right way to disseminate scientific information in a rapidly moving field. For those of you who might want to purchase this book, it is published by Cambridge University Press, and the ISBN is 0-521-38232-7. I doubt that I will be buying it, even though I would very much like to have its contents in my personal library. joe

As the editor of the proceedings, I can tell you. The British Computer Society, who sponsored and adminstered the conference, have an exclusive contract with the Cambridge University Press. We had no reasonable option other than to use them for the proceedings. I am sorry it is so expensive for you and that it took so long for your store to obtain. I expect future ECOOP conferences to revert to Springer. -- Steve Cook steve@cs.qmw.ac.uk Object Designers Ltd Glebe House Telephone 0279 755396 Great Hallingbury Bishops Stortford Herts CM22 7TY

I am looking for the exact publication information ( publisher, ISBN, etc. ) for the Proceedings of the 1989 European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming ( ECOOP '89 ). My friendly local tech book store has been able to get the '87 and '88 ECOOP proceedings, published by Springer-Verlag, for me, but they can't find a reference to ECOOP '89 from Springer nor can they find the ECOOP '89 title in "Books in Print." Can someone help with this, please ? Thanks in advance, Walt -- "Exploring the consensual hallucination of cyberspace." Walt Peterson. wlp@calmasd.Prime.COM "The opinions expressed here are my own."

It ain't from Springer Verlag in 1989 the publisher was the British Computer Society and their agent Cambridge University Press. It meigt be difficult to get outside Europe, and it's a heavy thing (hard bound). My information about it is: @proceedings(ECOOP89, Key = "ECOOP'89", Editor = "Stephen Cook", Title = "{ECOOP'89}, Proceedings of the 1989 {E}uropean {C}onference on {O}bject-{O}riented {P}rogramming, {B}ritish {C}omputer {S}ociety {W}orkshop {S}eries", Month = jul, Year = 1989, Publisher = "Cambridge University Press", Abstract = "Conference held the 10--14 July 1989 at East Midland Conference Centre, University of Nottingham, England. Proceedings contains 21 refereed (selected from 90) and 2 invited papers" ) The ISBN number is 0-521-38232-7. Maybe You can buy it directly from the British Computer Society. They had some for appr. 35 pound sterling just after the conference. You can get the bibtex bibliography from me with all the 23 articles indexed. Also note that the most relevant papers has been published in a special issue of 'The Computer Journal' also by the British Computer Society.
