Alan Knight knight@cascade.carleton.ca -------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Smalltalk Mag? Hello people. Have you noticed that there just aren't any magazines dedicated to Smalltalk? I know JOOP has a few articles, sometimes, and there is the regular column by Lalonde and Pugh which, great as it is, just leaves me wishing for more, but there isn't any newsletter devoted entirely to Smalltalk. I've been corresponding with some people and we feel its about time that this sad situation was corrected. I am seriously considering starting up a bi-monthly newsletter. I've got experience as a writer, columnist, newsletter producer and I'm a great believer in Smalltalk. If I could get a thousand subscribers or so, the newsletter would be viable. I've worked on newsletters and magazines with circulation ranging from 300 to 30,000. The thousand or so subscribers is a minimum to recoup the production costs and possibly grow into a monthly magazine later. I'd appreciate any comments you might have concerning the following. A Smalltalk magazine. Working title: "Smalltalk. Pure and Simple" (Any suggestions?) Publication: bi-monthly. (6 times a year.) Supplemental: A BBS for online access to material, editor and for submissions and other editorial purposes. Content: Minimum of 40+ pages of articles, columns, review and opinions in the ratio of material submitted. The magazine is completely about Smalltalk. (ObjectWorks SmallTalk-80 and Smalltalk/V (V, 286, Mac, PM, Windows) Price: $48.00 /year /subscription ($8.00 /issue, (less than 20" per page)) plus postage and handling (bulk Post Office rates in effect when subscripting) Advertising: None planned until the newsletter is registered, has an ISSN and some circulation statistics to support competitive advertising rates. Reviews of products by their developpers will be verified for accuracy and printed without charge to the originating organization. Writer Fees: $0.15 to $0.20 /word for published material. Articles and columns. Reviews of products by their developpers will be verified for accuracy and printed without payment to the originating organization. To those with writing experience this will seem like top dollar for a hacker's mag but I believe that writing is a profession and commands professional rates. Publisher: Charles-A. Rovira Editor in Chief: Charles-A. Rovira Copy editor: (I've got someone lined up already.) Associate Editor: (I've got someone lined up for that too.) I am talking to some other writers and Smalltalk afficionadoes about writing feature articles and columns. The editorial calendar is still negotiable The first few issues might be all filled but your articles, texts, ideas, letters, assorted grafitti and comments will be the foundation of the newsletter. Smalltalk is what the news is about but YOU are the news makers. Let me hear what you think. (P.S. This message will also be on Digitalk's Board on Compuserve) Charles A.
