We are designing an architecture for object-oriented database based on a modular open architecture and client-server model. All the communications between each module (such as object query manager, rule manager, and a database programming language manager) will be handled by UNIX system message passing. The ad- vantage is that for each application program, we do not have to compile it and link together with all the other DBMS modules. We are wondering if there is anyone taking the similar approach and has some experience in building such an architecture (e.g., is this idea feasible, if not, what is the problem?). Any comment will be highly appreciated and we will post a summary (provided that we receive significant number of response). Thanks.
