EXODUS is an extensible database system project developed at the University of Wisconsin under the guidance of Professor David DeWitt (and others) that addresses some of the data management problems encountered in CAD, CASE, and office-information systems. EXTRA and EXCESS are respectively the data model and query language for the system. It is interesting as it supposedly forms a foundation for some of today's commercial object database offerings. As with the commercial ODB companies, it provides persistent C++. There is a good overview of the system in "Readings in Object-Oriented Databases Sytems", published by Morgan Kaufmann (San Mateo, CA). I have heard recently that it (at least the storage manager) was put into the public domain. I am not affiliated with the University of Wisconsin and need pointers to the distribution site. --andy
