If you know of any bright students who might want to do a PhD in
Cognitive Science/HCI at Birmingham University, starting this October,
please pass this on. I believe two of the three studentships have now
been allocated, so applicants should act quickly.

Supervision will be shared between Schools if appropriate, including
Computer Science, Philosophy etc. Computing facilities are shared
between Computer Science and Psychology.

Joint Research Council studentships are available for research
projects in Cognitive Science at the University of Birmingham,
from October 1991. The studentships should be linked to research
on one of the following topics: computational modelling of emotion,
surface-based based procedures for object recognition, linguistic
control of speech synthesis, computational modelling of motion
perception, neural network modelling of visual attention or visual
word recognition, design tools for computer menus.

Likely supervisors for the projects listed include Glyn Humphreys,
William Edmondson, Mike Harris, Ela Claridge, Jane Riddoch, Aaron
Sloman.
