[fa.info-vax] BOF at DEC for BITnet VAXen

info-vax@ucbvax.ARPA (11/21/84)

From: Richard Garland <OC.GARLAND%CU20B@COLUMBIA.ARPA>

To all BITnet people on VAXes:

Call for a BOF at the Anaheim DECUS.

I will be going to Anaheim to the Fall '84 DECUS symposium
and I would like to organize a BOF (Birds Of a Feather session)
there for VAXes on BITnet. For those who don't know, a BOF is
sort of like a town meeting or a brain storming session where
everyone can give ideas. We could discuss problems, features,
etc. I can present information on public domain software which
is particularly integrated to VAXes and BITnet. 2 packages
are FINGER (which I wrote and which works outgoing and incomming
over BITnet) and some Remote Host Software (Originally written
by Craig Watkins and hacked up by me). Other issues might be

	A real mailer?
	A file server (a'la BITSERV)
Sending VAX non-text files (yes you can)

How about your ideas? See you in Anaheim: watch for announcements
of the meeting when you get there. We will try to get the VAX and
NETWORK groups to help drum up interest. I will also try to get
Craig Watkins (author of jnet), Richard Raffenetti (from Argonne -
NJE software), and Steve Arnold (Joiner Associates) to attend if
they are around. For your information, Steve Arnold will be giving
a formal presentation on connecting VAXes to RSCS networks at
6:30 PM Monday at the Symposium. I will attempt to schedule the BOF
later in the week and hope to get some additional publicity from
his talk (are you out there Steve?).

Please relay this message to anyone you may know on or
off net that may be interested.
