[alt.sys.sun] Access CD-ROM on Sun via PC-NFS?

esmith@peru.psych.purdue.edu (Eliot R. Smith) (02/20/91)

Greetings, netters. We are exploring the possibility of mounting a CD-
ROM on a Sun machine for access via NFS by some PC's. They run Sun's
PC-NFS software. The server is a 3/160 (SunOS 4.1, soon to be 4.1.1)
but we also have a SS1 on the net that could host the CD-ROM instead; I
understand that Sun's CDROM driver only runs on Sun-4's. I have gotten
rumors about two problems in this effort but have been unable to track
down specific information.

1. Supposedly Sun's CD-ROM driver software (ISO 9660) doesn't work in
this sort of application--the rumor further says that an organization
called Young Minds supplies a driver that does.

2. Also, rumor has it that the current version of Sun's PC-NFS
software will not handle seeks in a very large file (500 MB) typical of
a CD-ROM. The rumor further says that another vendor's PC NFS software
works OK.

Can anyone verify or shoot down these ideas? And obviously, if you have
attempted or done anything like this I'd be very glad to hear from you
with the gory details.

Thanks -- Eliot Smith
