Hello, everybody, I'd like to thank the people who responded to my earlier query about unuseable performance of OpenWindows on a 3/80. You all said it was a memory problem. While I agree that it could certainly use more memory, this alone does not explain the poor response (except see below). All of our 3/60's and several of our SPARCstations (including my own) also have only 8MB of main memory, and they are all performing quite acceptably with more windows open than the fellow on the 3/80 has. Additionally, the 3/80 is monochrome while the 3/60's are all colour, so if anything it should be less affected. The only difference I can think of is that the 3/80 is at 4.0.3, while the rest are at 4.1. However, before the other systems were upgraded to 4.1 last summer, they had been running OpenWindows for a few months, and nothing like this was observed on them when they also were at 4.0.3. Perhaps there is something in the 3/80's architecture or MMU that means it *requires* more memory than the others to run equally well? -- Ruth Milner Systems Manager NRAO/VLA Socorro NM rmilner@zia.aoc.nrao.edu
