[fa.info-vax] Implementing GATEWAYS

Hello again,

As Christmastime approaches, I find it that it is time for my monthly
network inquiry. This month's topic is GATEWAYS.

I am trying to come up with some kind of scheme whereby I could network
together some computers here at JPL via some kind of Local Area Net, and
then gateway those computers to the ARPANET.

Currently, there is a broadband Ungermann/Bass LAN installed at the Lab.
One method would be to net some machines together on this LAN, and put one
of them onto the ARPANET to act as the gateway. Another idea is to
implement some other kind of network for the LAN, and then do the gateway.

I am seeking information (general and technical) from persons who have
implemented LANs with ARPA gateways at their facilities. In general, I'm
interested in types of configurations that are being used, and your
experiences with them. I would also appreciate getting a feel for how
traffic affects the gateways, as well as a feel for an implementation
estimate with respect to manpower, software, time, and resources that were
needed to implement your particular configuration.

Our initial configuration will probably be all VAXes, but we would like to
plan a LAN/GATEWAY that is flexible enough to support many different CPUs
on the same LAN.

If you'd rather not clog up the mailing list with replies, feel free to
send them direct to me.

Thank you for any help/info/assistance anyone can send my way.
