[bit.listserv.wp50-l] Fonts: WordPerfect 5.1, Etc.

RWILLIAM@UVMVM.BITNET (Robert Williams, Jr.) (02/08/90)

I would like to know if Quattro runs slower too......I know WordPerfect
does and we are thinking of getting both new versions....I look forward
to 5.1.....Can we use the bitstream fonts that we used with 5.0.....?
I use the fonts quite a bit for desk top publishing.....Has desktop
publishing improved on WordPerfect 5.1....?????

We are getting the new versions of these soon and I want some more input
on how and what to expect????

Thank for your help.....Are we going to get a WordPerfect 5.1 subscriber
and Quattro Subscriber list.....Is there enough interest.......???

Quattro Pro probably does run a little slower because of all the disk
access for small overlay files. I've never put a stop watch to it
however. The tradeoff is that Quattro Pro can handle much larger
files than the original.

Couple that with the added capabilities of multiple spreadsheets, font
control, advanced graph annotating and I think you have a package which is
a major step up from the original (which I thought was great to begin with).

There is one immediate probelem. WordPerfect 5.1 does not read Quattro Pro
files directly, you have to save them in Lotus format. From what I have read
on this list the 1/19 upgrade to WP 5.1 solves this problem.

There is a Quattro list running out of Yale but there doesn't seem to be
any action on it.

WordPerfect 5.1 does support the use of bitstream fonts. A new version
of the fontware is offered.

"Bitstream Fontware 3.0 for WordPerfect 5.1 has been improved to:
 - Take up less disk space.
 - Allow you to make up to 26 user-defined character sets.
 - Let you share fonts among several applications.
 - Support new printers like the HP LaserJet IIP, DeskJet, and the
   Canon LBP8-II.
 - Feature special character sets such as ASCII Business and
   ASCII Technical.
To order your Bitstream Starter Kit, which includes four styles
each of Swiss and Dutch (Bitstream's versions of Helvetica and
Times Roman) plus one weight of Bitstream Charter, a $535 value
for just $29.95, call (800) 222-9409." p.817 WordPerfect 5.1 Manual

As I understand it, the new Bitstream package is quite different and
is necessary for creating fonts for WP51. In addition, users with
old versions of the Bitstream package can't upgrade. They have to buy
the package for $29.95.

We have ordered a copy of the new Bitstream package but haven't received
it yet. In an attempt to hold us over, I have converted our WPRINT*.ALL
files from WP50 to WP51 using the WP51 PTR Program. It works quite
well.

I hope this helps.

Hello Dear WordPerfect freaks,

I'd like to comment on <RWILLIAM@UVMVM>'s question about a QUATTRO discussion
group/list. There is already one, but there aren't many messages or questions
on it. Quattro is such a good program, so ...

The address is <QUATRO-L@YALEVM>

Notice that Quattro is written with one 'T' (This is not a writing error from
me ||||)

I'd also like to ask something about WP. What is meant with bitstream fonts
from within WordPerfect and how can one use/activate them ?

Can the new Bitstream package still work with WordPerfect 5.0? I know a
user who needs softfonts for the HP IIP but are not ready to upgrade to 5.1.

You can speed up Quattro Pro quite a bit if you have more then 640K
of memory. Even if you have just 1MB (which most 286 machines come with
today), you can set a VDISK for extended memory and then tell Quattro
to use the RAM disk for its swap files.

The new interim release of 5.1 is supposed to support Quattro file
importing directly.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is on the listserv at YALEVM?
