I agree with the comments about trying to respond directly to the sender,
rather than to the list, when the reply may not be of general interest.

Apparently some mailers do not keep/display the id of the original sender.
The way around that is to include one's email addresses in the signature.
Many mailers can automatically append a signature block, so this should not
be too onerous a task.

One other technique that works well on other lists is for the requester to
ask for replies directly, which he/she then tests and summarizes back to the
list. Saves everyone time.

I imagine that someone could object that adding a 3- or 4-line signature block
to all messages will add unneeded burden to the net--I think the tradeoff in
not having messages broadcast everywhere is clearly beneficial.
