[bit.listserv.wp50-l] The Exit Key

MULLISH@NYUACF.BITNET (02/13/90)

It is a continual source of surprize to my students of WordPerfect that
everytime the program requires you to press F7, it tells you to press the
Exit key. The frequency with which this message appears is considerable.
Finally, one student (a PhD in math), quite exasperated by the fact that
he couldn't seem to remember this fact, asked the good question: If WordPerfect
means press F7 why the hell don't they say so! I ventured the opinion
that they reserved to themselves to change the key in the future but I was
much less convinced by the answer than he was.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'd sure like to hear them. Henry Mullish, NYU

Remember that you can use WP on more machines than an IBM PC and that the
F7 key is not present on all of them. Exit on the VAX is not at all the
same. This way the directions are consistant and the key you press is
determined by the machine you work on. I would say this is one part
of WP that actually works well with the different platforms.

Those of us who live in the IBM (compatible) world sometimes think
ours is the only way to live. WordPerfect is available for many
different machines. The F7 key is not necessarily the Exit key on
every machine. For example, the DEC Rainbow 100s used in a lab
on our campus use a Shift-F11 for Exit. Why, I don't know.
Basically, WordPerfect Corp. is saying, press the Exit key, which ever
key that might be. Since you can redefine your keyboard to have
any layout you want, I don't think someone would like to be told to
press the F7 key when the Exit key is assigned to the Esc key, for
example.
