[comp.dsp] Reading a CD player's digital output

dcj@flume.ZK3.DEC.COM (Dave Jedlinsky OSEM) (09/27/89)

I'm interested in connecting the digital output of a CD player (or, more
specifically, a PCM recorder) to the digital input on a NeXT cube. Has
anyone done this? Is any extra hardware required for converting the
bitstream into something the digital input can take? How is the the
cable wired?

I'm planning on writing some software to deal with reading this input,
and converting it to a .snd file. Has this already been done?

On a similar note, where can I find literature describing the format of
the digital bitstream from the CD player/PCM recorder?

I asked this question over in rec.audio a while back and received the
following pointer:

    AES3-1985
    (ANSI S4.40-1985)

AES Recommended Practice for Digital Audio Engineering--
Serial Transmission Format for Linearly Represented
    Digital Audio Data

It was printed in J. Audio Eng. Soc., Vol 33, No. 12, 1985 December, p979ff.

Note that the format of the _VIDEO_ I/O of the PCM recorder is
quite different (digital info in an NTSC monochrome picture with
sync pulses and so on), and I don't have that spec. If anyone
has it, please post a reference.

What is the format of the digital input for the NeXT? If that port
simply goes to the synchrounous serial input on the 56000, then
things are easy if you also have a CD player that utilizes the
Sony data separator chip (Sony and Denon players use it, at least).
There is an app note from Motorola on how to insert a 56000 into
the serial data stream of a Sony CD player. Note that you'll have
to open up the CD player and AT LEAST do some tack soldering (one
wire). If you use the digital out of the CD player, you'll have
to get rid of all of the subcode information that's sent along
for the ride. This means you'll have to do some programming for
the 56000. However, I'll bet that someone already has an application
built for the NeXT machine for just plugging the CD player in.

It is worth noting that the Japanese standard and the AES standard define
the order (meaning) of two of the subcode bits differently. The emphasis
bit is not affected. Essentially all systems use the Japanese standard.
