I have recently been given a task to write a Viterbi decoder for the TMS320C25. I have a copy of a variable constraint length version from Sklar, _Digital Communications_, and would have to translate it into C, then use the C compiler to get TMS code out. Since I've heard some horror stories about the C compiler and its inability to optimize its code, I was hoping to find someone who has already gone through this. The algorithm itself need not be exactly what I'm looking for (i.e. Sklar, 3202x family). Thanks. markt@wpi.wpi.edu or tsombakos%edcd@gte.com (617) 455-3587

Horror story about 'C' compiler for the TMS320xxx A friend of mine was using the Texas C Compiler for a student project at Surrey University. He was having a number of problems, and got onto TI about it, but their customer support was not too hot seeing as he was a mere student (read 'pleb':-). He was developing his system for MSK carrier recovery on a Loughborough Sound Images board, so he 'phoned them in search of the assistance which had thus far eluded him. He was told: 'Oh yeah, we don't use the C compiler anymore, because no-one ever got it to work'. He re-started basically from scratch, which involved much desperate assembly-code hacking needing to be done to get his project in in time.
