From: Ronald A. Jarrell <JARRELLRA@VPIVAX3.BITNET> EVRAC has a section in it to format RX01's I believe.. I've never used it, I just use the SCANNER section to format our RP07's. -Ron Jarrell

From: Mike Hannon <HANNON@CMU-CS-PS2.ARPA> I believe that EVRAC will format RX02's but not RX01's. - Mike ------

From: engvax!KVC@cit-vax If I remember correctly, the story is that you can use a DEC diagnostic to format floppies (EVRAC maybe?) but that the console floppy drive (an RX01) is incapable of performing whatever functions are required to actually do the formatting. Thus, if you have an RX02 on your 780, you can use the diags to format floppies, which could then be used in the console RX01. I don't know if this is how things are, but this is what I remember from a discussion about this that took place a while back. Can anyone clarify this? /Kevin Carosso engvax!kvc @ CIT-VAX.ARPA Hughes Aircraft Co.

From: Dave Goodall <goodall%admin.okanagan.bcc.cdn%ubc.csnet@csnet-relay.arpa> If you have an RX02 on a VAX you can format floppies with the following commands: INIT DYA0/DENSITY=SINGLE label INIT DYA1/DENSITY=DOUBLE label Dave Goodall Okanagan College Kelowna, B.C. Canada

As long as the subject of floppies is up: I've been using a uVAX-I lately, which comes with two double-sided 5.25inch drives. I've only been able to use Digital disks in these drives, other disks (regardless of brand or single/double sideedness) just won't format with the initialize command. Does DEC do something to their diskettes? Randy Day. UUCP: {decvax|ihnp4}!uw-beaver!uw-june!randy ARPA: randy@washington CSNET: randy%washington@csnet-relay

>From much experience with RX01 and RX02's on LSI-11's (under RT-11),
only the RX02's can format a disk (or do double density). If I remember
correctly, I never had any trouble with diskettes on the RX01's as
long and I inited them and ran BAD on them (BAD will scrag the
whole disk, thus writting every sector). They are soft sectored and
aren't very smart (the RX01's that is).

That is because the initialize command does not format. The DEC disks are preformatted. Don't ask me how to format them, i've tried. Random Research Triangle Institute ...!mcnc!rti-sel!rcb
