[alt.postmodern] Re-post: rec.arts.fine call for discussion

mann@intacc.uucp (Jeff Mann) (09/06/90)

I am posting a summary of the official call for discussion for
rec.arts.fine which was posted to news.announce.newgroups on August 12,
1990. I have not seen much in the way of responses to the call which I
will take optimistically as agreement with the proposal. However, I
want to post this again in case anyone has any disagreements or
suggestions for improvement.

I will be posting a call for votes to news.announce.groups on September
20th, with instructions on how to vote. If you wish to be notified by
e-mail of the call for votes, send me a note at the below address.

The proposal is for an unmoderated newsgroup for the discussion of fine
art. Although discussions of traditional art forms such as painting and
sculpture would be welcome, I think the Usenet community would be more
interested in the new art being created with computer and electronic
technologies.

Here are a few examples of the kind of art I would like to see discussed
in this proposed group:

Computer/electronic controlled sculpture, interactive environments for
image, sound, dance, etc., algorithmically generated poetry, text,
images and music, artistic uses of video discs, cd-roms and computer
graphics, experimental video and film, live performance using computer,
video and sound, software art, telecommunications art, holography, space
art, multi-media art, and any other creative, aesthetic, or artistic use
of science and technology. Whew!

Intellectual/critical discussions would be fine as long as they don't
deteriorate into "what is the definition of Post Modernism?" type of
discussions. For the purposes of this group, art would be defined as
"anything that anyone calls Art".

Arguably, this type of discussion could go into rec.arts.misc, but I
think that category is too general. Fine art is a very important aspect
of our culture.  Every major  university  has  a  fine  art  department;
galleries and art museums are considered the pride of many cities. I
think it definitely deserves a place in the Usenet hierarchy.
