[comp.unix.aix] Kermit and old AIX'es

vlruo02@dutrun.UUCP (Ge van Geldorp) (11/30/89)

I pulled the beta-test version of C-Kermit 4F from Columbia University.
The Makefile of this version has 3 entries for AIX: AIX PC/RT 2.1,
AIX PC/RT 2.2 and AIX PS/2 1.0. I'm about to add an entry for AIX PS/2
1.1...
This seems a little bit silly to me. I'd say one AIX entry should
suffice. The differences are mainly in the location of the lock files,
used to obtain exclusive access to outgoing terminal lines. I know that
AIX PC/RT 2.2.1 and AIX PS/2 1.1 keep those lock files in /etc/locks.
(Well, at least that's the place where `pdelay'ed ports build lock
files). I don't have access to systems running AIX PC/RT 2.1 or AIX PS/2
1.0. Could somebody who has access to those systems please tell me if
the lock files for those systems are also kept in /etc/locks? Thanks.

The lock files on AIX/RT prior to 2.2, as I recall, are actually kept
in two different places. Some of the programs (getty, ate) kept lock
files in /etc/locks, whereas uucp kept locks somewhere in the uucp
setup. None of these programs had provision for lock recovery.

When BNU was shipped (cu, ct, and uucp) all lock files were moved to
/etc/locks. BNU, at least, steals locks when they are not in the
proper format, and/or do not contain a process number of an active
process.

So the answer is: I know that they are different, and I don't
remember where they went. I've also thrown out all of my 2.1.2
manuals...
