I recently posted an article on my experience with trying to compile the X11R4 server for IBM RT/AIX/Megapel. YUK! Judging from all the responses I received (Gary Kakazu, Peter Mutsaers, Roddy McColl), it seems that the IBM server is NOT supported in R4. But to quote from the RELNOTES.R4, ::systems is available from a wide variety of vendors. The ::servers in this release have been built on the following ::systems: :: :: Ultrix 3.1 (both VAX and RISC) :: SunOS 4.0.3 :: HP-UX 6.5 :: Domain/OS 10.1 :: A/UX 1.1 :: AIX RT-2.2 and PS/2-1.1 :: ^^^^^^^^^^ :: IBM AOS-4.3 :: UTEK 4.0 :: ::The client libraries and applications have been built on all ::of the above systems, plus: :: :: NEWS-OS 3.2 :: UNICOS 5.0.1 :: UNIX System V, Release 3.2 (AT&T 6386 WGS) The common problem seems to be in compiling ./server/ddx/ibm/mpel/mpelData.c. It has some union initialization problems (I can probably take care of his one) and forward declaration. Please drop me a line if you've managed to compile the server as the RELNOTES.txt claims it can be done. As always, E-mail greatly appreciated. Mumit. -- khan@xraylith.wisc.edu

I think we went through this one a while back, but just to clarify, R4 does not have support for AIX 2.2* on the RT. The RT is only supported in R4 when it runs AOS/ACIS 4.3. The confusion stems from the fact that the CLIENTS were built and will work on AIX 2.2*, but the server won't. So, to sum it up, R4 will build and run on AIX PS/2 (1.1 or 1.2), and on the RT running AOS 4.3. The clients may build and run on various other machines and OS's, but the servers are only known to run on the two aforementioned platforms. >Mumit. -- khan@xraylith.wisc.edu Sorry that that's the answer, but I hope it clears things up. One other thing about X11R4 on the RT (AIX): we did compile all clients and have a complete R4, except for the server, which is still R3. But we have some problems with this: - xterm does not work well with curses, during the start of a program that uses curses, xterm hangs for about 1 minute (displaying H -E twice) - although most R4 clients should be able to run with the R3 server, we cannot run X11 from the console anymore. Does someone has solutions/remarks to this? -- Peter Mutsaers email: muts@fysaj.fys.ruu.nl Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht nmutsaer@ruunsa.fys.ruu.nl Princetonplein 5 tel: (+31)-(0)30-534504 3584 CG Utrecht, Netherlands
