I'm posting this for a friend, please respond directly to him. Thanks. Has anyone out there attempted or perhaps already been successful in porting the X11R4 Server code to the RISC System/6000? It didn't sound like people were having too much luck getting it running on the RT, but I'm hoping the RISC System/6000 doesn't have the same limitations. We have a model 320 running 9013S5, although I will be re-installing with 9021 any day now. The copy of X11R4 we have is from a very recent Uunet tape distribution so I'm assuming it has all of the recent patches. Please mail directly to me and I'll summarize. ****************************************************************************** Scott McCambly phone: 613-235-9364 The Braegen Group Inc. fax : 613-235-3193 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada email: uunet!moore!bragrt!bragotrt!scott ****************************************************************************** -- .../Paul Maclauchlan Moore Corporation Limited, Toronto, Ontario (416) 364-2600 paul@moore.com -or- {...!uunet,...!telly}!moore!paul "I thought it but I kept it hid"/EJ&BT'83

Well, the IBM MIT server won't work due to the fact that it was written for the RT and PS/2. It only supports the displays and display adapters that these machines support. While the 6091 display is similar to the Megapel (5081) that would work on the RT, the display adapter is different. Without code to drive the display adapter, the rest of the server won't do too much for you. You can compile and run the X11R4 clients on the RS/6000, and display them on any system running X11R4. For now, the only X server available for the RS/6000 is the AIXWindows server that you can buy from IBM. It is based on X11R3, with Display Postscript extensions. >Scott McCambly phone: 613-235-9364 >The Braegen Group Inc. fax : 613-235-3193 >Ottawa, Ontario, Canada email: uunet!moore!bragrt!bragotrt!scott Steve DeJarnett Internet: steve%ibmsupt@uunet.uu.net IBM AWD Palo Alto UUCP: ibmsupt!steve@uunet.uu.net (415) 855-3510 VNET: dejarnet at ausvmq These opinions are my own. I doubt IBM wants them.......

I've heard rumors that IBM doesn't intend to move to X11R4 on either the RS/6000 or the PS/2 (much less on the RT which is a piece of crap and IBM seems to recognize that since there are rumors they're desupporting it next year anyway). Are these rumors (the ones about X11R4, I don't care about the RTs) true? Does IBM ever intend to get their act together w.r.t X11? They still don't have a complete implementation of X11 Rev. anything! Just look at their "aixterm" (which they try to pass off as an xterm also).

You can get a complete implementation of X11R3 from IBM. All the mit clients such as uwm and xterm are shipped as source on the X11 samples diskettes that come with IBM's X11 on the PS/2. Note that none of this is true for either the (AIX)RT or RS/6000, just the PS/2. --Jeff Jeff Weinstein - X Protocol Police Silicon Graphics, Inc., Entry Systems Division, Window Systems jsw@xhead.esd.sgi.com Any opinions expressed above are mine, not sgi's.
