We are interested in doing "high speed" file transfer between
a VAX-750(VMS) snd a SUN Workstation. (using TCP/IP ?)
Can anyone offer any experiences, suggestions, or advice ?
* The hosts are about 3 miles apart.
* We are currently installing an Ungermann/Bass broadband LAN.
(Accessible at both sites)
* One consideration is to use pount-to-point modems across the
broadband cable.
(What are possible host to modem hardware interfaces?)

From: allegra!packard!harvard!bu-cs!root@BERKELEY (BostonU SysMgr) At Boston University we have a 4.2bsd TCP/IP driver for U/B. It also will just conditionally compile (#define VMS) into The Wollongong Group's TCP/IP (the EUNICE people.) Once in and an NIU-150 attached to your VAX via a DR11-W you can talk TCP/IP over your U/B just like an ethernet (broadcast, ARP everything, about the same speed also.) Unfortunately, we are just starting to port it to a SUN, should take a couple-few months at most. This with the above will solve your problem nicely. We will spec the hardware for you on the SUN, as we do in the driver for the VAX [eg. exactly what parallel interface to use for the SUN.] If you would like the 4.2bsd driver you are welcome to it, send me mail directly. Note that if you have a cluster of SUN's (or VAXen for that matter) you would only have to plug one into the U/B with this driver, the gateway software on 4.2 would take care of the rest. What it would cost you: (unless you have these things) 1. Eunice License - at least one site must have Eunice to re-compile stuff 2. TWG TCP/IP license 3. DR11-W 4. NIU-150 hi-speed parallel option Plus whatever will be needed on the SUN. (estimate: $1500+NIU/150) Tell your SUN rep about all this, they know about us here (Roger Appel, Massachussetts office), Univ of Vermont is waiting for this also. I know this isn't immediately available, but you may want to seriously consider this becoming available when making short-term decisions. It will be offered to SUN customers via the CATALYST program (hopefully, cost of distribution...free as far as I am concerned via email.) -Barry Shein, Boston University
