We are trying to connect two 3com ethernet cards into a PS/2 model 80. Initially, to make things simple, we are trying only one card, but so far without success. The board and network seem O.K. because if we boot DOS all works fine, but with AIX no such luck. The opsys and tcp/ip are at level 01.02.0014.0000 Apparently an upgrade is required (to level 01.02.0300.000) but this is currently not with us. (Another customer in the U.K. has this update and it makes no difference to them). IBM technical support has talked us throught the `minor' changes required so we should now be at the 300 level by a back door route. On rebooting the following message is issued:- ifconfig: ioctl (SIOCGIFFLAGS): no such interface netstat -i gives:- Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts .... 3c0* 1492 none none 0 .... Numerous attempts have been made including rebuilding and installing kernals like ther's no tomorrow but to no avail. What would be nice is a piece of paper (electronic of course) containing installation instructions, IBM cannot supply one. The situation is getting desparate so I sugested I take a 3com card to the IBM (U.K.) technical support centre at Basingstoke and try an installation there, but thats no good as IBM don't have any ethernet! Are 3com cards supported? Any help would be most appreciated. Paul Jarvis Computer Centre, Imperial College, London pj@cc.ic.ac.uk

Yes, there is support for the 3COM Ethernet adapter under AIX V1.2 available. It was included as part of the non-integrated function library (i.e. it didn't go through full IBM software test). As many of you are aware, the version that went out with the released code did not work. There is, however, a fix for the code. My group developed the original code, and also the fix for V1.2. We have been assured that the fix is being included in the updates, but I'm not sure that's always the case. Anyway, if you are looking for this fix, and the updates didn't do it then you can get it from my group. The fastest way (believe it or not) is to have your IBM representative send a VNet (the IBM network) note to RIPLEYR at RCKVM1 or to have him or her call Rodney Ripley on tie line 372/2048. If you don't know who your IBM rep is, or you don't feel satisfied with the response you get, send me some mail (jfenne@super.com) and I'll look into it. Please include your location and the name of your IBM rep (if known). I'd also be interested in hearing about what updates you've applied. One last thing: The 3COM and Ungermann-Bass Ethernet adapters are mutually exclusive under AIX V1.2. If you have the U-B adapter installed, delete it from your list of device drivers. -- Jack Fenner IBM Federal Sector Division Advanced Programs, Gaithersburg MD Temporarily assigned to Supercomputing Research Center, Bowie MD
