There has been a number of reports on boot problems resulting in LEDs 553, 552, and 551. The following steps may help save you some time. LED 553 - causes: / or /tmp too full; inittab got corrupted 1) Go into install/maintenance mode by booting from boot diskette or tape with the key in service position Note: If using diskettes, all three (boot, console, install/maint) must be loaded 2) Select option five on menu for install/maintenance. You'll get prompt. 3) Type '/etc/continue hdisk0'. This will take a minute or so to run. 4) Type Ctrl-D to exit current shell 5) umount /dev/hd2 umount /dev/hd3 6) chroot /mnt /bin/ksh 7) mount /dev/hd2 /usr mount /dev/hd3 /tmp 8) bosboot -a shutdown -Fr Remember to move key back to normal position. This procedure also works if LEDs were stuck at 201 while booting. If your / or /tmp were too full, delete something to recover space. Usually smit.log and smit.script on / are enough to get the system back to normal. If your inittab is corrupted it may sometimes be easier just typing it back in unless you have saved a handy copy on diskette. Here's a basic inittab file for starters. : @(#)inittab 1.22 com/cfg/etc,3.1,9021 4/6/90 17:18:07 init:2:initdefault: brc::sysinit:/etc/brc >/dev/console 2>&1 # Phase 2 of system boot rc:2:wait:/etc/rc > /dev/console 2>&1 # Multi-User checks srcmstr:2:respawn:/etc/srcmstr # System Resource Controller rctcpip:2:wait:/etc/rc.tcpip > /dev/console 2>&1 # Start TCP/IP daemons rcnfs:2:wait:/etc/rc.nfs > /dev/console 2>&1 # Start NFS Daemons cons:0123456789:respawn:/etc/getty /dev/console piobe:2:once:/bin/rm -f /usr/lpd/pio/flags/* # Clean up printer flags files cron:2:respawn:/etc/cron qdaemon:2:once:/bin/startsrc -sqdaemon writesrv:2:once:/bin/startsrc -swritesrv rcncs:2:wait:sh /etc/rc.ncs ------------------------ LED 552 - causes: multiple; cannot varyon root volume group 1) Go into install/maintenance mode by booting from boot diskette or tape with the key in service position Note: If using diskettes, all three (boot, console, install/maint) must be loaded 2) Select option five on menu for install/maintenance.
