We have a number of printers around our campus accessible via lpd. The host systems run anything from Sun OS to VM/CMS. A number of these printers are known by queue names which are greater than 7 characters long. When trying to define these printers to AIX, this apparently causes a problem. Other than renaming the queues on the remote machines (out of the question), is there any way around this. Should I just give up and port lpd. Thanks, Scott

AIXV3 limits lpd queue names to 7 characters. This problem has been fixed by APAR 13583. Apparently queue names were being truncated for compatibility with RTs. Unfortunately this seems to have made it incompatible with everything else. The fix to this APAR is available but will not be part of the ICRA. Call IBM support and ask for this fix if you need it.
