[comp.unix.aix] XStation 120 - AIXWindows vs. real X11 - Obstracle

mezger@dia.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de (Kai Martin Mezger) (11/19/90)

We are running some of those XStation 120 pizza-boxes connecting to a
RISC/6000 320 via thin-wire ethernet.

Trying to get an xterm (et. al.) from our HP-Boxes (HP-UX 7.0)
displaying on these "displays" we don`t get nothing. Our PC/RTs
display just great, so it won`t be a matter of disabled access (we do
a xhost +).

Did anybody on the net solve this or similar ?
802.3 ?!?) ?

Btw., did anybody experience a speedup of this boxes using their
"native" fonts instead of those in the AIXWindows-Distribution?

As always... ANY help will be aprecciated

Martin

Yes, we saw a dramatic increase in performance. The 'x_st_mgr'
doesn't seem to handle font paths correctly, though, so you will
probably need to create a single font directory for the Xstation.

Concerning the question about handling the 802.3, which version of
the software do you have loaded? A month or two back I received an
update to the 'x_st_mgr' that was supposed to have fixed (or possibly
enabled 802.3). It should be the same as on the 3001 update. Since
we are not running on thin, I can't tell you if it works.

First, we are not running AIX nor System/6000. However, we did experience
problems connecting an X-terminal (actually an emulation running on a PC)
and a System V.3 host to a System V.4 host. Apparently, the V.4 system required
to setup a socket number for X in the "services" file. I am not sure whether
it is your problem but it is worth checking out.

802.3 will not be supported until after the 3002 update and an EC upgrade to
the EtherNET hardware on the Xstation.

The documentation I received with my Xstation software upgrade specifically
states "supports IEEE 802.3 protocol". The update version is listed as
3001. To request the hardware upgrade, the documentation suggests contacting
IBM-SERV or remarketer and requesting "ECA 001" for the Xstation.

I ran into something similiar when I first instlled X. I noticed that
the default DISPLAY setting is unix:0. This would not work with my
ISC unix box. When I changed the 6000 DISPLAY to sabus:0 (hostname =
sabus) all was right. Remote xterms called up from the PC to the
6000 work as expected now.
