[comp.unix.aix] AIX PS/2 modem configuration

lehtonen@cs.Helsinki.FI (Tapio Lehtonen) (12/06/90)

I keep getting modem commands even in the X.25 line. This makes
logging in and initiating the session difficult. The commands are those
Hayes commands used to initialize a modem for auto-answer and some
others. How should I configure the line so that all programs involved
believe it is not a modem line? CLOCAL + or - doesn't seem to affect
anything.

Related to previous: I would like to get my auto answer modem to
answer on the 3rd call. I found out there is a CHAT -string that
when written to /etc/ports can be used to send modem commands. This
works, but after CHAT getty (probably getty?) send its own modem
commands as before.

Local IBM reps claim that these problems do not exist. I would be
grateful if someone:
1. would confirm that indeed AIX PS/2 sends modem commands allways
2: would know what to do.

Our experience has shown that the getty program does indeed send
Hayes specific modem commands to the modem. Because of this, it
is difficult to use IBM modems on the PS/2...

Our solution was to use emacs to edit the binaries of getty and
remove the offending character sequences. We used this trick to
our advantage when we needed to send commands to the modem to
make it work on a dedicated line. This might help you with your
need to make the modem answer on the third ring.

Also, we have found various IBM representatives to be quite fond
of saying that this is not a problem, or "gosh, I've never seen
this before." It borders on being pathetic.

Best of luck with this.

FILE AN APAR ! The only way we can add support for different modems
is if customers complain that it isn't there. I just looked through
the getty code and it wouldn't be that difficult to add support for
more modems. If only someone would tell us which ones they'd like
supported. As far as the X.25 problem is concerned, it looks like
just a plain face bug. File an APAR.
