[comp.unix.aix] Non IBM Memory for RS/6000

lab3e@landau5.phys.virginia.edu (Louis A. Bloomfield) (12/12/90)

A number of individuals have asked about 3rd party memory for the RS/6000
machines (e.g. posting on Nov 27, 1990 by Don Preuss: donp@niaid.nih.gov).

The actual memory cards are themselves difficult to clone, however
SIMM kits (eight SIMM modules) to upgrade these cards to 16 MB or 32 MB
are now being sold by:

Impediment, Inc.
333 Franklin Street
Duxbury, MA 02332
(617) 837-8877

at a price of less than $200 per MB. They are already shipping the kits.
I have had a 32 MB kit in my model 320 for about a month and its works
beautifully. I purchased my machine with only 8 MB of memory, hoping
that some company would sell me SIMMs for a price more in line with the
actual cost of the memory chips. I seem to have gotten lucky.

The SIMM kits work in the models 320, 520, and 530. Unfortunately, IBM
issued the model 540 with special 3.5 volt memory chips, so that these
new SIMM kits will not work in the model 540 until they are field
changed by IBM.
