[comp.unix.aix] Memory upgrades to R/6000s

mahesh@caradhras.cc.nd.edu (Mahesh Subramanya) (01/16/91)

Is there a low cost way of upgrading the memory
on a model 320?? As far as I know, IBM is the only
company that sells the memory boards, but I also
hear that the system memory consists of a board
with SIMMS of some sort mounted on it. Is it
possible for me to just scrap the current set of SIMMS
and replace them with something else? Will it take
straight parity SIMMS i doubt it tho). Does
any one else out there manufacture these ?

Has anyone out there actually upgraded the
memory themselves??

Thanx in advance for the info

No third party memory boards are available, but some people have
reported success in this group of upgrading the 8MB IBM memory cards
by replacing the SIMMs with third party 2MB/4MB SIMMs (16/32MB card
capacity) designed for the RISC System/6000 memory cards (straight
parity PC SIMMs will definitely not work, just count memory chips on
your board to figure out why). At the back of the latest PC Week
magazine is an ad by Sigma Data (800-446-4525) claiming to have such
SIMMs in stock....

This is not an endorsement in anyway and I have had no dealings with
SD other than happening upon their ad in PC Week.

I enclose two articles previously posted on this subject. I have also
discussed the possibility of obtaining unpopulated memory boards from
IBM with my local ACIS rep. While he was initially optimistic that it
would be possible to get them if the order quantity was large enough,
he does not now believe it will be possible.

I know of 3 vendors who are advertising RS/6000 SIMMs. I also know
that the SIMMs from at at least the first two of these vendors
actually work, since I have had some in my machine for testing.

Don't be surprised if there is a bit of a wait on delivery, since no
one is really geared up for production yet. 1 MB, 2 MB, and 4 MB
SIMM's should be available in quantity from these guys by January or
  so (my guess).

Subject: Non IBM Memory for RS/6000
  Date: 11 Dec 90 17:31:11 GMT

A number of individuals have asked about 3rd party memory for the RS/6000
machines (e.g. posting on Nov 27, 1990 by Don Preuss: donp@niaid.nih.gov).

The actual memory cards are themselves difficult to clone, however
SIMM kits (eight SIMM modules) to upgrade these cards to 16 MB or 32 MB
  are now being sold by:

  Impediment, Inc.
  333 Franklin Street
  Duxbury, MA 02332
  (617) 837-8877

at a price of less than $200 per MB. They are already shipping the kits.
I have had a 32 MB kit in my model 320 for about a month and its works
beautifully. I purchased my machine with only 8 MB of memory, hoping
that some company would sell me SIMMs for a price more in line with the
actual cost of the memory chips. I seem to have gotten lucky.

The SIMM kits work in the models 320, 520, and 530. Unfortunately, IBM
issued the model 540 with special 3.5 volt memory chips, so that these
new SIMM kits will not work in the model 540 until they are field
  changed by IBM.
