I have heard from my spies in IBM (comments invited to confirm or deny): 1. PS/2 AIX is dead (no more new versions, except for bug fixes). 2. AIX has not been certified for the PS/2 90 and 95. 3. AIX will never be certified to work on the model 90 and 95. 4. Not said to me, but a conclusion of (3) is no support for XGA. 5. The only way to run Unix on the model 90 and 95 and have IBM's blessing is to run SCO's Open Desktop, with which IBM have a licensing agreement. 6. Future Unix versions for IBM PS/2s may be SCO's ODT or something similar from a joint development between IBM and SCO. Mark Kosten (who denies having written the above)

I'm making this posting for an IBM marketing person, Brennan Carley, who doesn't have access to post it himself: >From: CCMK@lure.latrobe.edu.au (Mark Kosten - Computer Centre, La Trobe Uni.) >Subject: AIX 1.2 is dead (was X server for PS/2 XGA under AIX 1.2) > >In article <714@lhdsy1.chevron.com>, meo@lhdsy1.chevron.com (Mike E. PS/2 AIX is dead (no more new versions, except for bug fixes). This is absolutely untrue. IBM just announced and has begun to ship a new release of AIX PS/2. IBM remains committed to AIX on the PS/2. IBM's president (Jack Kuehler) has publically stated that a future version of AIX PS/2 would be OSF/1 based. >2. AIX has not been certified for the PS/2 90 and 95. Also nonsense. AIX PS/2 1.2.1 is fully supported on the models 90 and 95. >3. AIX will never be certified to work on the model 90 and 95. See above. >4. Not said to me, but a conclusion of (3) is no support for XGA. AIX PS/2 1.2.1 supports XGA in VGA compatibility mode today. >5. Future Unix versions for IBM PS/2s may be SCO's ODT or something similar > from a joint development between IBM and SCO. Also false. Future versions will be OSF based, in line with IBM's strategic direction for AIX. But no authoritative statements or even an inside voice. Maybe some of the IBM'ers that read this group can give us a hint without making an official statement? My company is putting a lot of resources into learning AIX for the purpose of supporting "future" buisness. And if this is a dead end alley on the PS/2 platforms for god's sake tell us. We have worked with SCO since before time so we don't have a problem there. But I am paying people to learn this thing as I type. :-( If it's a dead end we're gonna be stung. BTW, I talked to a IBM AIX Tech durring a "Hot call" about a week ago and he said that AIX 1.3 would be out in about a month? He said the current "update (26 damm disks)" was getting out of hand and that they would be going to a new release level. (He thought it would be 1.3 but it might be the rumored 1.2.2) BTW, if anyone want's to e-mail me a note with more authority I won't say a word if you don't want me to. Or even better I'll mention the rumor from another voice if you're okay with it.. :-) Thanks in advance, Karl -- % ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- % Karl Bunch ||| UUCP: ..!uunet!zardoz!ttank!karl % Think Tank Software ||| INTERNET: karl@ttank.com % "...you'd be suprised how far a hug will go with Geordi, even Worf!" -- Riker

A number of people have sent me mail telling me about AIX 1.2.1 and its support of XGA. I happened to see my source in IBM again today so asked further questions. Remember, *I* am not saying this! 1.2.1 counts as a bug fix and minor update. There is still not Xwindow support of high-resolution XGA. A new version of AIX will be an amalgam of something done with SCO, but also related to OSF in some way. It might be called AIX, but will not be the same code as exists today. Expect an announcement in 3-6 months with regard to Open Desktop. All this came about because while wandering about an IBM building I came across a guy from SCO demoing Open Desktop on a model 90. I inquired about this unusual looking event and found out the above. So, that's all I know. I don't run Unix so have no axe to grind, I just thought you AIX 1.2 users might find this interesting. I can't vouch for the veracity of IBM long-term planning, however. Plus, that's all I know, so no more upsetting-the-applecart mail from me! Mark Kosten

AIX 1.2 will never be certified for the model 90 and 95. AIX 1.2.1 has already been certified for the model 90 and 95. IBM is devoting most of the PS/2 AIX resources to porting the OSF/1 kernel over to the PS/2 (and thus the model 370's). AIX 1.1, 1.2 (and now 1.2.1) were developed by IBM and Locus Computing as a joint project between the PS/2 and the Model 370's. Most of their efforts and bug fixes have gone in to making the two machines work together. This was important as the Model 370's do not know how to talk to ASCII terminals; they need the PS/2's in order to do that.

The above statement should have read: PS/2 AIX release 1.2 is dead. It is being replaced by AIX 1.2.1. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
