[comp.unix.aix] AIX3270 & TCP/IP simultaneously on token ring

ignacij@orion (Ignacy Misztal) (04/02/91)

Are there any problems in having PC's access an RS/6000 over a token ring with
telnet and having the RS/6000 use AIX3270 to exchange data with an IBM
mainframe? A second question concerns ethernet and token ring connections
on the same machine.

I assume by AIX3270 you mean telnet 3270-style. If so, this will
work. The 'tn' command shipped with AIX 3.1 will support 3270
terminal emulation. The PC users can telnet into the S/6000 and then
telnet out to the mainframe.

If, on the other hand, AIX3270 is another product, you will need to
ask the vendor of the product if it supports attached terminals.
Usually, rt support for terminals will handle users coming in over
TCP/IP.

Yes, the RISC System/6000 will support simultaneous Ethernet and
Token-Ring connections. Properly configured, the TCP/IP support from
AIX will provide routing of IP packets between the two networks. Be
aware that the two interfaces will have to have addresses on different
networks.
