My machines here are running AIX 3.1.5. Sometimes when I try to log in, after I type my username at the login prompt, it takes MINUTES (!) to get the password prompt. As I checked, no one is running any big jobs on the machine. And somtimes, I found even no one was currently logged on. As I recalled, it occurs only after the installation of the 3005. Does anyone have the same problem or similar? Thanks in advance for any information! Ching Shih shih@cithex.bitnet shih@cithe1.cithep.caltech.edu

You should see a REAL improvement in login time, if this was your problem in the first place. This goes for anyone with a large /etc/passwd file, it really helps. >Ching Shih >shih@cithex.bitnet >shih@cithe1.cithep.caltech.edu Later, Julie -- *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Julie A. After we used the patch, login time is shortened VERY much. Julie responded, together with my head SA, Dennis Micheal, a patch was worked out and now even with over 9600 active accounts in our yp passwd file, our RISC 6000s DO NOT have long login delay problems. Most of the time it's as fast as other machines, only occationally it's bearably slow. If IBM keeps getting good people like Julie, man! SUN/DEC/HP will be in trouble :-) I post this to complement these nice and helpful IBM software develpers like Julie. Good job. Thanks. I have a related problem. The system prompts me to login. I enter a name, and instead of prompting for a password it gives a login incorrect message and reprompts with "login:". This comes and goes. I have never figured it out sufficiently for a defect. -- Benson I. Margulies

I'm still blushing....But on to more problems. We've had this reported, and usually it seems that it happens on the console, and something else it grabbing the console and fighting with getty. So, next time you see it, check out who has the console. We're still trying to track it down. Let us know what you see, and if we get a fix, I'll let you know. >-- >Benson I.
