Hi, this is my first-ever article to network news so, Greetings! I hope this works... I have couple of very general questions, so maybe someone out there in network land can E-mail me some advice. My department has several RT's and a new RS/6000, all connected on a TELNET (ftp/TCP-IP) network. Ideally, we would like to use the 6000 as a number crunching X-server and the RT's as X-clients. My main plan is to port some software written in C++. With that as background: (1) I need to get X-Windows installed on our RT's (AIX 2.2.1). We can buy the port from IBM, but I am wondering what our options are. The salesman says it is a "pure" port and nothing more -- no Motif look, no Motif window manager, etc. Basically, what are the possibilities with X-Windows on RT's? (2) The C++ package was developed using AT&T's C-Front translator. I don't know if there is a port of this for either the RT or RS/6000. I have read that the GNU G++ compiler was never successfully ported to the RT, and that I can better wait for release 2.0 of the compiler for the RS/6000. We could live with C++ just on the 6000, but my experiences in software development have shown me that no two compilers think exactly the same -- a useful debug tool. Again, what are the possibilities for C++ on RT's and 6000's? I am a grad student, at home in Unix, but new to AIX and IBM machines. Any advice, comments or stories-of-experiences about setting up a X-Window network and/or C++ in AIX would be welcome. Thanks and regards, sorliej@kth.se
