I have the potential option to get a PS/2 (386) running AIX PS/2 on loan for graduate research, but I don't have any experience with AIX (I have used most other flavors of UNIX), so I don't know if this machine will help or hinder my work, so to speak. Could those who are using (or have used) AIX PS/2 *please* give me some insights into its reliability, portability, etc. etc. Of particular concern is the performance of X11 on e.g. a 20MHz 80386 with 16 MB RAM. I will be the sole user, so X11 will more than likely be the most demanding program running at any given time. Also, any comments regarding difficulties in compiling "common" PD UNIX tools such as Perl, RCS, and the GNU stuff would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for all you AIX people who help me in this! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Patrick Stickler Research Unit for Computational Linguistics OH2/KC4YYY Department of General Linguistics stickler@cc.helsinki.fi University of Helsinki ========================================================================== The comments contained herein reflect the official views of my employer. AIX PS/2 running X11 might be a little slow, but other wise I find it to be a very nice Unix implementation. Make sure you have plenty of paging space and everything should be fine. As to PD stuff, I have compiled GNU emacs 18.57 recently with no problems but all the Larry Wall stuff (uses Configure script) don't install too well on my system. They can't seem to come up with the answers and I certainly don't know the order of bytes in an integer or whatever. I posted to comp.lang.perl, but got no answer. Your mileage may vary. J. E.
