[connect.audit] Request for SCSI chip manufacturers/details

object@ibmpcug.co.uk (Ken Tough) (06/03/91)

Some time ago there was a request for info about SCSI chips from a
reader in Australia. That article is no longer on our newsreader,
but I hope this response will be of some help to somebody.
The person was looking for manufacturers or distrubuters of SCSI
chips in Australia.
We here in England have gone through some similar trouble in trying to find
the SCSI chip best suited for our needs. During our search, there was a
very interesting article published:
"SCSI ICs", by Maury Wright, EDN (Electronic Design News?)
Magazine; a Cahners publication, March 28, 1991 pp. 122-131.

This article has a fairly comprehensize list of chips available. I'm sorry
that I don't have a list of mfg. addresses in Australia, but here is the
quick summary :

Most of these mfgs are large enough to have a head office in Australia.
For NCR, we in England are handled through a distrubtor called
Manhatten Skyline. We have found the 53C94 to suit most our needs,
and they are very willing to give out full databooks on the whole
product line. The CHIPS chip is one well suited to PC/AT type
environments, as is the NCR 53C700 (we work with 68000 processors).

If you send a FAX to the US numbers given above, requesting the name
of distributors in your country, you usually get a quick response.

Feel free to Email me if you want any more info. on the chips listed.
