An announcement that the AGROFORESTRY newsgroup is now up and running has been
made on BIONEWS. I'd like now to start the ball rolling in the newsgroup.
As many of you will know there is already an IUFRO Project Group on
Agroforestry (P1.15-00), and many people worldwide are attempting to set up new
groups/ networks/ collaborative proposals. In calling for this newsgroup to be
set up the UK Agroforestry Research Discussion Forum (UKARDF) was not
attempting anything so grandiose as this. We merely aimed to establish a
framework for fairly effortless, free, communication where the time-consuming
administration would be handled by someone else. Time will tell whether the
newsgroup is useful. I certainly hope that it will be used by people in the
international establishment (ICRAF, IUFRO, CGIAR etc.) to announce their
initiatives, and by agroforesters in general to air their views, problems and
solutions.
When new BIOSCI groups start up it has become customary for users to send in a
very brief description of themselves and their research interests. So here
goes.... and apologies to all of those for whom this is repetition...

INTERESTS:
Temperate agroforestry: Small trial with poplar/ash/alder in row mixtures with
different crops. Also growing wide-spaced broadleaves in tree-tubes in
sheep-grazed Scottish uplands.
Tropical agroforestry: Planning trials (mainly taungya) for proposed stay in
Cameroon (1990-92) as part of long-term forest management and regeneration
project (hence my wish to see good computer links established !)
Genaral: Micrometeorology, plant productivity/ physiology, bioenergy crops.

As an interested amateur in permaculture and biosphere management,
I'd be very interested in getting references to papers & articles
on agroforestry. I've heard mention of it in other places, and
have seen articles on coppices and multi-use of forestland, but
this sounds more thorough. Info, please!
